Demystify the Ribbon Bouquet
Besides a big bunch of ribbons, standby your scissors, needle and threads, a French clip (if you're making hair accessory). What are these ribbons? As a guide, here is what I have used in this bouquet. |
A BIG easy 2 loops bow - I made this bow with two 25mm (7/8 inches) width ribbon. Cut the ribbons at 450mm (18 inches) length and seal the ends. Layer the ribbon together and make a two loops easy bow with up-down tails. Pull out the inner layer ribbon and you'll get a thin four loops bow. A butterfly shape loopy bow. This is 75mm (3 inches) bow made of 25mm (7/8 inches) width ribbon. Two small easy tails down bows, each of them is made of 330mm (13 inches) length 16mm (5/8 inches) width ribbon. |
150mm (6 inches) length ribbon strips. There are more than twenty of them here in various ribbon widths and shapes, curly, wavy...
There's no fix rule of how much ribbon you can use. Layout them into spider webs and stitch their centers. I have four sets here, two big webs and two baby webs with bow.

Set aside these ribbons and bows and you're all set to go.
Hip fashion ribbon bow on the way...
Now, we are ready to stitch them up. Layer 1 and 2: Pick one spider web and place on top of the big two-loop bow. Stitch them up together, have your thread loop the centers at least two rounds. |
Layer 3 - top: Place the butterfly shape four-loop bow on top of the spider web and have your thread loop the centers a couple of rounds. |
Layer 3 - sides: Now, place the small two loop bows with spikes, one on each side of butterfly shape four-loop bow. Have your thread loop the bow centers each time you add ribbons to it. |
Layer 4: Pick up your last spider web and place it on four-loop bow, have your thread loop the centers a couple of rounds and finished off. |
Finishing Touch:
Almost done, but it needs a hair cut before the show.
Trim all the ribbon legs or spikes. I'll just do a 45 degree cut for 10mm (3/8 inches) width ribbon, but I'd recommend a v shape cut for wider ribbons.
How much to trim? Look at your bows to estimate the length. To achieve a good hip fashion look, the spikes should be approximately 25mm or an inch beyond the bow.
As you trim, look at your bow from all angles. Your trimming should make the bow into an even shape and not out-of-shape.
When you are satisfied, remember to seal your ribbon ends. Either fray check them or heat seal with flame.
We've got the Ribbon Bouquet. What's next?
